CEO Column: RWC 2011 on the road again

From July 4, the RWC 2011 Roadshow will be bringing a little taste of the Tournament to 27 towns and cities across New Zealand...

Our greatest desire, when planning how we would like to deliver the RWC 2011 Tournament to the Rugby world, was to find a way to genuinely involve the whole of New Zealand in the hosting of this event.

That is why the 12 host venues for the RWC 2011 matches are spread from Whangarei in the far north to Invercargill in the deep south. That is why the 20 participating teams, between them, will be hosted in a total of 24 cities and towns. That is why the REAL New Zealand Festival, which is being wrapped around the Rugby Tournament, will feature events happening in and showcasing just about every region in our country.

And now, over the four weeks of July, we will be taking the Webb Ellis Cup, Rugby’s ultimate prize, on a whirlwind RWC 2011 Roadshow visiting over 30 locations spread over the South and North Islands.

We know that bringing the Cup to town will generate lots of excitement as well as the realization that the start of RWC 2011 is now just around the corner. But it’s not just another Cup tour. This Roadshow will offer fans their first real taste of what RWC 2011 will be like.

Day 1 of the Roadshow, July 4, will be special. During the morning the Cup will be on display in Bluff, the southern-most tip of the South Island, best known for its delicious oysters, and then that afternoon will see a flying visit to Stewart Island (population 402). The Cup, in its 24 year history, has never been further south anywhere in the world. Those 402 people are Kiwis and we want them to feel that they are part of our nationwide hosting effort.

It will also be special because it will be the day we get our last phase of ticket sales underway. From July 4, tickets will be available for the general public to buy online or direct from selected Ticketek outlets. We’ve already sold hundreds of thousands of tickets, but there are still tickets available for almost every match.

On each morning during July, our specially customised truck will be basing itself in a handy city or town-centre location, giving locals the chance to get up close and have their photo taken with the Cup, but at the same time to sample some of the fun that the festival will be bring to the event.

RWC 2011 will of course be about the Rugby but it will also be about our country and our people coming together with our thousands of international visitors to have fun. I’m sure that the Roadshow will show that New Zealanders everywhere are passionate about this opportunity and are really looking forward to playing their part in what we think will be a memorable and great moment in our history.

So if the Cup turns up in your place on a chilly morning in July, drag yourselves out of bed, throw on your warm woolies and come pay us a visit.
